About Short Web Films

I’m Ian Williams, a freelance videographer, writer, producer and editor based in north London. I work predominantly in corporate and promotional video.

For me, the most important thing is to get your story across in a memorable and entertaining way.

Whilst I often work as a one-man ‘crew’, I call in sound technicians, directors, actors, artists, producers and anyone else who can help make your video truly amazing. If you want to know more, then offer me a job and let’s meet. We can have some fun putting your video together.

Bringing in writers, directors, actors, illustrators and video crew (and anyone else who can help make your video truly amazing) as and when required, Ian Williams can also work as a ‘lone shooter’.

As a freelance videographer, writer, producer and editor based in north London, I work predominantly in corporate and promotional video but also in education (training actors and directors in camera technique).

For me, the most important thing in any video (aside from great lighting and audio) is the STORY. Getting your story across in a memorable, entertaining way is vital. Without that, what’s the point?

If you want to know more, offer me a job and let’s meet. We can have some fun putting your video together. If you want to watch a ridiculous comedy game, take a look at my Lockdown Murder Mystery. Ridiculous because, not only did I film and edit it, I play all twelve roles.

CHROMA-KEY

Combined with animation for the best of both worlds.

equipment

Shooting in your office, on location or in a studio, I bring lights, camera and mics but will advise on the correct equipment for each job.
For example, fast lenses are great for drama. 4:4:4 cameras (or at least 4:2:2) are best for Chroma work.

Hang on a minute! Who are you?

I’m at a slight disadvantage. You know a fair bit about me, that I love the digital revolution and am experienced in shooting, lighting and editing video (as well as being a writer and animator). You can probably figure out I use many of the programmes in the Adobe family (including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects) and that I work on a Mac (in fact, I won my current Mac Pro in a video competition).

But I know very little about you, which doesn’t seem fair. So allow me to make assumptions:

I imagine, since you’ve landed on this page, you are either looking for someone to make (or help you make) a video OR you are a fellow supplier looking to collaborate.

Either way, you’re in luck.

Making a video

If you are looking to make a video, I can help. Possibly, you work for a large corporation (I’m guessing here) or own a small to medium sized business (am I getting warmer?) Or maybe you are an individual (obviously, you’re an individual) looking to shoot a crowdfunding video, or some kind of promotional video, or a documentary? Yes?

Whether you are looking to make a corporate, promotional, training, educational, special interest, documentary, animated, dramatic, or almost any other kind of video, I can help. Or maybe you simply want a freelance editor to put your existing footage in order, or a freelance cameraman. Or maybe you want some training in setting up an in-house video department. Give me a call or drop me an email, and we’ll come up with a plan.

Collaboration

I’m keen to collaborate (just look at the things I’ve promised above). Whilst it’s true I can shoot, light, edit, animate, do a certain amount of graphics, there are times when it’s good to have help (for example, I own a quad-copter but I’m not CAA qualified so I can’t do commercial aerial shots. I can’t draw, so require artists for my animations, I can act and do voice-overs, but it is hard to act and pull focus at the same time. And just imagine how much sleep I’d lose if someone wanted a deep sea diving video).

So, if you are an artist, actor, writer, director, producer, salesperson, fellow videographer (sometimes require a second or third camera), audio specialist, deep sea cameraman, CAA qualified UAV pilot, stills photographer or have any other kind of speciality you think would be helpful, please get in touch. It is always good to make new contacts in the filming world.

I really am looking for fellow filmmakers, artists and actors (last time I advertised for actors, my letterbox broke). If you think you have something to offer, please contact me.

The animatic process

A brief introduction to the animatic process, where an illustration or cartoon is gradually revealed to the audience. This moderately simple trick is great for getting complex information over. Audiences pay far more attention to your speaker, and the images underline the message.

This is an original drawing from award winning cartoonist, Simon Pearsall (other artists are available). Check out his website (opens in new window). Simon is both funny and really good at catching likenesses. Perfect for a ‘team message’ video.
